The purpose of Fort Griffin State Historic Site is to manage and preserve the historic military fort built in 1867 so that future generations can enjoy and understand this period of Texas’ history. Fort Griffin also manages and conserves the land used for grazing for the official Texas State Longhorn herd, which has been located here since 1948. Furthermore, Fort Griffin staff also manages and conserves a small campground, which offers wildlife viewing, fishing and other outdoor recreational opportunities.
Fort Griffin State Historic Site is a Texas Historical Commission (THC) property. The THC’s mission is to protect and preserve the state's historic and prehistoric resources for the use, enjoyment and economic benefit of present and future generations.
